The Greene County sheriff’s office K-9 Leo earned his keep in his first year of service.
Chief deputy Jack Williams is Leo’s trainer and handler. According to Williams’ annual K-9 report, an estimated $35,830 in illegal narcotics was seized due to Leo since he reported for duty Feb. 3, 2014.
Leo is credited with the seizure of 14 pounds, 1-1/2 ounces of marijuana with a street value of $19,600; 5-1/2 ounces of methamphetamine with a street value of $18,480; and 3 grams of cocaine with a street value of $360.
Leo assisted with 87 vehicle searches and found contraband in seven of those searches. Leo searched five buildings and found contraband twice, and he searched three school buildings and found contraband three times.
Leo was also put to work in five searches for persons or fleeing criminals.
Williams reported training with Leo 111 hours for the year.
Leo’s care and keep are covered by Williams. His veterinary care and equipment are covered by donations, as was $10,000 for his purchase and initial training. The K-9 unit receives no tax dollars, Williams said.
